This Symposium on Environmental Issues and Waste Management in Energy and Mineral Production (SWEMP) is the thirteenth in a series of biannual symposia on the subject matter. The basic aim of this series of symposia is to contribute to the development of methods and technologies for assessing, minimizing and preventing environmental problems connected with mineral and energy production.  This symposium has come to be recognized as a leader in promoting international technology transfer. A wide range of high quality papers from North and South America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia have been attracted. Major topics to be covered are: Environmental Impacts of Coal-Fired Power Projects, Mining and  Reclamation/Rehabilitation in Context of Landscape Ecology, Post-Mining Reclamation/Rehabilitation and Principles of Landscape Architecture, Water Management in Post-Mining Sites, Holistic  Approaches  to Reclamation/Rehabilitation, Spontaneous Succession as a Tool of Restoration, Social Aspects of Rehabilitation, Sustainable Development for Mineral and Energy Industries-national perspectives, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Energy and Mineral Production Operations, Remediation of Contaminated Soil and Groundwater, Health Hazard and Safety Issues in Small-Scale Mining, Environmental Issues in Surface and Underground Mining of Metalliferous, Coal, Uranium, Industrial Minerals, Occupational Health and Safety and Rehabilitation of Mineworkers, Control of Effluents from Mineral Processing, Metallurgical and Chemical Plants, Emerging Technologies for Environmental Protection, Mine Site Closure and Rehabilitation, Computer Modeling, Optimization and Applications, Geographical Information Systems(GIS) and Remote Sensing in Reclamation/Rehabilitation, Reliability of Waste Containment Structures, Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Tailings Treatment, Recycle and Disposal.

These symposiums are designed to provide a forum for the presentation, discussion and debate of state-of-the-art and emerging technologies in the field of mining and emerging technology in the field of environmental management. The past series of these symposiums have attracted delegates from over 25 countries around the globe and have been highly successful. We are certain that MPES and SWEMP 2012 will be equally successful. We invite you to be part of this meeting which will provide you with extensive opportunities to participate in professional and social endeavours and a strong opportunity to network.
